San Diego: Day 1

My mom, sister and I spent a long weekend in San Diego a few weeks back to celebrate my sister's birthday.  We had a lot of fun enjoying our girls' weekend!  (You are safe to assume that any high-quality pictures in this post are courtesy of my sister, aka our resident photographer.  Thanks sis!)

After a quick stop at Starbucks (a necessity on any #halseygirlstrip), we hopped on an early morning flight and arrived in San Diego by mid-morning on Saturday.  We were able to check into our hotel first thing and get settled before we headed out for lunch.  Our hotel (Residence Inn) was brand new and located right on the bay, so we had a great view of Coronado Island and the USS Midway Museum.

We walked down to Seaport Village and ate lunch in a seafood place on the bay.  After lunch, we met some new animal friends on the pier.  There was one seal (or sea lion?) in particular who kept waiting for us to feed him, so he put on quite a little show for us.  We were impressed.

Our next stop was down the boardwalk to the USS Midway Museum!

We did the guided tour (which was excellent, but long!) and tromped around the aircraft carrier, up and down, front and back, until our legs nearly collapsed.  We ended our tour with a great view of the city from the flight deck.  (Our hotel is the one with that big yellow stripe!  Made it very easy to find.)

Thanks to the last minute purchase of a selfie stick (best purchase ever), we finished our visit with a selfie with the Coronado Island navy base (featuring Halsey Field!) in the background.  One of our distant relatives, Bill "Bull" Halsey, was an Admiral in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific theater.  The runway field on the base is named after him.

After a jam-packed day, we wound down in Little Italy with a delicious Italian birthday dinner for my sister.

The evening wrapped up with this one-of-a-kind DIY dessert and the purchase of a "vegan" purse.  I know, I know.  We didn't get the "vegan" thing either.  ;)

It was a great first day to our trip.  Stay tuned for Days 2 and 3 of our trip!
